5 days in Siem Reap: Angkor and the town

Two extra days let you look beyond the headline temples without treating every waking hour as a temple circuit. One road day combines art, difficult history and conservation; the other deliberately pauses through the hottest part of the day.

5 daysCulture-focused visitorsBalanced paceMid-range
Day 1

Three major Angkor sites, with breaks

Give Angkor Wat the largest block and let the other two temples be focused visits. A driver and proper lunch break keep the day realistic; this is not a claim to complete every Small Circuit stop.

Angkor Wat → Bayon → Ta Prohm; driver connections and permitted temple walking.
Open day route
Morning7:30 AM

Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat west visitor approach, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Explore the principal permitted galleries and courtyards with enough time for interpretation rather than only the best-known exterior view. The block does not require entry to the Upper Tower or every corner of the complex. Work with the current visitor route, pause in appropriate areas and leave before exhaustion makes the following temples feel like obligations.

Time
3 hours
Cost
Valid Angkor pass; guide and transport separate
Hours
Confirm current gates, visitor routes and upper-level restrictions Visitor information

Worth knowing: Carry your pass and follow the sacred-site dress requirements. Do not cross conservation barriers or climb a closed upper section.

Midday12:30 PM

Bayon

Central Angkor Thom, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Choose a careful route through the currently open areas, looking at reliefs and the building's dense arrangement rather than chasing every tower angle. Some parts may be restricted for conservation. Heat can be demanding by this point, so keep the visit selective and agree the exit and pickup location with your driver before separating.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Valid Angkor pass
Hours
Operator lists 7:30 AM–5:30 PM; individual sections may close Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 25–40 minutes by driver, with a substantial lunch and rest break beforehand

Worth knowing: Do not assume an upper terrace is open because it appears in older photos. Keep water available and shorten the visit when needed.

Afternoon3:00 PM

Ta Prohm

Small Circuit Road, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Follow the managed paths through the temple's combination of stonework and large trees, keeping to permitted surfaces. It is not an invitation to scramble over ruins for a familiar film-related photograph. Focus on a limited route and allow time to reach the agreed exit; entrances and exits can be far enough apart to confuse an unplanned pickup.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Valid Angkor pass
Hours
Check current visitor route and last entry Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 25–40 minutes by driver, with a cooling break before entry

Worth knowing: Agree the exact gate with your driver and respect one-way routes or barriers. The trees and ruins do not make every nearby path suitable for visitors.

Day 2

A selective Grand Circuit day

Visit three contrasting sites rather than trying to complete the whole circuit. Leave a long lunch gap and return to town early enough to recover; another sunset climb is intentionally absent.

Preah Khan → Neak Pean → East Mebon; driver loop with separate walking approaches.
Open day route
Morning8:00 AM

Preah Khan

Grand Circuit Road north of Angkor Thom, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Use the morning for a measured route through the open temple areas rather than rushing the long approaches. A guide can help choose a coherent path, but the visit should still respond to closures and the group's comfort. Agree which gate you will leave from and keep enough energy for the next site instead of exploring every possible passage.

Time
2 hours
Cost
Valid Angkor pass
Hours
Confirm current temple access and conservation notices Visitor information

Worth knowing: Stay on the designated visitor route and confirm the exit with your driver. Do not enter a blocked passage to complete a loop.

Midday11:00 AM

Neak Pean

Grand Circuit Road, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Take the designated approach and spend time with the water setting and permitted views rather than expecting unrestricted access to every structure. The block includes walking in and out, not just time at the central viewpoint. Water levels and weather affect the appearance and experience; neither a particular photograph nor a fully open path is guaranteed.

Time
1 hour 15 minutes
Cost
Valid Angkor pass
Hours
Follow current walkway and temple-viewing access Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 15–25 minutes by driver, plus the designated walking approach

Worth knowing: Follow walkway instructions and do not leave the permitted route. Turn back if local staff restrict access because of conditions.

Afternoon2:30 PM

East Mebon

Grand Circuit Road, East Baray area, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Explore the levels and details that are currently permitted and comfortable for you, without treating every stair ascent as compulsory. This is the final temple of the sample, so take time to compare its setting with the previous sites rather than rushing onward. If heat or fatigue persists after lunch, remove this stop and return to town early.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Valid Angkor pass
Hours
Confirm the current open levels and final-entry time Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 20–35 minutes by driver, with a long lunch and rest break before arrival

Worth knowing: Assess steps and surfaces before climbing, and respect closed areas. A shorter lower-level visit is preferable to exceeding the group's comfort.

Day 3

Museum context, crafts and a performance

Shift from archaeological sites to town culture and allow a genuine afternoon rest before the show. The craft center is the city location, not the separate silk farm that would need more road travel.

Angkor National Museum → Artisans Angkor city craft center → Phare Circus; short town transport links.
Open day route
Morning9:00 AM

Angkor National Museum

968 Vithei Preah Sihanouk Avenue, Salakanseng, Svaydangkum, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Use the galleries to connect the previous two days' architecture and imagery with historical and religious context. Choose a few themes rather than attempting to read every panel. This is a separate town museum, not part of the park ticket, and its indoor setting gives a useful change of pace after two days of outdoor temple walking.

Time
2 hours 30 minutes
Cost
Separate paid museum admission; not included in Angkor pass
Hours
Operator lists 8:30 AM opening; seasonal closing times differ Visitor information

Worth knowing: Check the current gallery and photography rules. Use the museum's own address and calendar rather than the Angkor park ticket-office information.

Afternoon1:00 PM

Artisans Angkor — Siem Reap craft center

Chantiers-Ecoles, Stung Thmey Street, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Visit the city craft center to observe the work that is available that day and ask about materials and techniques. A purchase is optional. Do not confuse this location with the silk farm in Puok, which would add another out-of-town journey. Leave the remaining afternoon for a hotel break rather than filling it with shopping stops before the evening performance.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Confirm current guided-visit arrangements; purchases separate
Hours
City center lists daily guided visits; check the current programme Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 15–25 minutes by local transport, plus lunch before arrival

Worth knowing: Confirm the city craft-center location and current tour arrangements. Ask before photographing workers or touching unfinished pieces.

Evening7:30 PM

Phare, The Cambodian Circus

Phare Circus Ring Road venue, Sok San area, Svaydangkum, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Arrive before the evening performance and settle into the seat category you selected. The show combines contemporary performance forms and is a different cultural experience from temple sightseeing. The block includes arrival before the approximately one-hour show, not ninety minutes of performance. Read the current programme and ticket conditions, then arrange the return ride without assuming immediate transport outside.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes including arrival
Cost
Separate performance ticket; seat categories differ
Hours
Listed evening show at 8 PM; confirm your date and programme Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 15–30 minutes by local transport; dinner and a hotel break before departure

Worth knowing: Check that the booking is for Siem Reap and the correct date. Some seating categories can have restricted views, so compare the seat map before paying.

Day 4

Banteay Srei: carving, history and butterflies

Leave town early and keep the three contrasting visits on the same northern corridor, with lunch after the temple.

Banteay Srei → Cambodia Landmine Museum → Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre; allow lunch and transport buffers between visits.
Open day route
Morning8:30 AM

Banteay Srei

Road 67, Banteay Srei district, Siem Reap province, Cambodia

Study the carved surfaces from the permitted visitor route with time for interpretation, staying behind barriers instead of reaching for a closer photograph.

Time
2 hours
Cost
Check current Angkor pass coverage and validity
Hours
Check current opening days, visitor access and last admission before setting the date Visitor information

Worth knowing: Check pass validity and the current circulation route; do not touch stonework.

Midday12:30 PM

Cambodia Landmine Museum

Road 67, Banteay Srei district, Siem Reap province, Cambodia

Explore the museum's interpretation of conflict, mine clearance and its human consequences, leaving room to pause if the material feels difficult.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Paid admission; check current visitor category
Hours
Check current opening days, visitor access and last admission before setting the date Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 15–25 minutes by road and lunch

Worth knowing: Personal guided visits need advance arrangements; only enter public exhibition areas.

Afternoon3:30 PM

Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre

Road 67, Sanday village, Banteay Srei district, Siem Reap province, Cambodia

Take time with the butterfly garden and interpretation, learning about the visitor centre's work without expecting any particular species to appear.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Paid admission; check current visitor category
Hours
Check current opening days, visitor access and last admission before setting the date Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 15–25 minutes by road

Worth knowing: Confirm the final visitor session and never handle butterflies without staff direction.

Day 5

Three Angkor temples with a proper heat break

Two morning visits are followed by lunch and several hours to cool down before the final temple.

Ta Keo → Banteay Kdei → Pre Rup; allow lunch and transport buffers between visits.
Open day route
Morning8:00 AM

Ta Keo

Small Circuit Road, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Explore the temple's permitted approach and lower architecture before considering any stairs, using interpretation to understand its form.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Valid Angkor pass required; confirm current conditions
Hours
Check current opening days, visitor access and last admission before setting the date Visitor information

Worth knowing: The steep upper route is optional; follow access barriers and your own mobility needs.

Morning10:30 AM

Banteay Kdei

Small Circuit Road opposite Srah Srang, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Give the temple's permitted corridors and courtyards an unhurried visit, paying attention to the layout rather than trying to enter every passage.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Valid Angkor pass required; confirm current conditions
Hours
Check current opening days, visitor access and last admission before setting the date Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 20–35 minutes by road

Worth knowing: Uneven surfaces and conservation work can alter the visitor circuit.

Afternoon3:00 PM

Pre Rup

Grand Circuit Road, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Return after a substantial rest for a separate temple visit, enjoying the lower architecture without making a summit or sunset essential.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Valid Angkor pass required; confirm current conditions
Hours
Check current opening days, visitor access and last admission before setting the date Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow lunch, a long shaded or hotel rest, then 20–35 minutes by road

Worth knowing: Finish before the current closing time and avoid steep wet steps.

Questions about this trip

Does a five-day holiday mean a five-day Angkor ticket?

No. Check the current pass products and count the dates when you enter covered sites; city museums and private attractions have separate admissions.

Must we climb Ta Keo or Pre Rup?

No. Steep upper levels are optional and may be unsuitable or closed. Use permitted lower routes and staff advice.

Why is there such a long afternoon gap?

It protects lunch, cooling down and rest. The plan is not intended to keep you walking through the strongest heat.
