5 days in Bangkok for a first visit

The two additions stay within Bangkok, leaving time for interpretation, temple etiquette and a proper lunch rather than adding a distant excursion.

5 daysFirst-time visitorsBalanced paceMid-range
Day 1

The palace and two river temples

Start at opening, walk south to Wat Pho, then have lunch before crossing to Wat Arun. Keep the evening free: the three visits already make a substantial day in Bangkok’s heat.

Around 3 km walking within and between sites, plus a short cross-river ferry when operating
Open first stop
Morning08:30

Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew

Na Phra Lan Road, Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

Focus on the Emerald Buddha temple compound and the palace areas open to visitors, rather than assuming every royal building is accessible. The decorative detail rewards stopping in a few places instead of hurrying through the entire grounds. Give security and the dress check time at the beginning.

Time
2 hr 30 min
Cost
฿500 foreign visitor admission; check current eligibility and inclusions
Hours
Usually 08:30–16:30, ticket sales until 15:30; official ceremonies can affect access. Visitor information

Worth knowing: Read the official daily schedule as well as the dress rules. Enter via the authorized visitor route; a stranger’s statement that the palace is closed is not a reliable closure notice.

Midday11:30

Wat Pho

2 Sanam Chai Road, Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

See the reclining Buddha and then leave time for the courtyards instead of joining a second queue immediately. Shoes come off where required, and the temple is an active religious place. A massage treatment is a separate purchase and time commitment, not something the ninety-minute visit silently includes.

Time
1 hr 30 min
Cost
฿300 foreign visitor admission; treatments separate
Hours
Temple’s current visitor page lists daily 08:00–19:30; worship and individual areas can differ. Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 15–25 minutes walking from the palace exit, with a water break

Worth knowing: Have lunch in the Tha Tien area after the visit. Keep the clothing appropriate for the next temple so there is no need for a return to the hotel.

Afternoon14:30

Wat Arun

34 Arun Amarin Road, Wat Arun, Bangkok Yai, Bangkok 10600, Thailand

Look closely at the decorated tower surfaces and explore the areas open to visitors. You do not need to climb steep steps to appreciate the site, and reaching the highest possible level is not the goal. Crossing the river also gives a useful sense of Bangkok’s geography after the enclosed palace compound.

Time
1 hr 15 min
Cost
Tourism authority lists ฿200 admission; ferry extra
Hours
Tourism authority lists 08:00–18:00; confirm current temple access. Visitor information

From the previous stop: After lunch, allow 20–35 minutes for walking to Tha Tien, waiting and the ferry crossing

Worth knowing: Do not assume every boat is the short crossing. If river service is suspended, use a road transfer only if energy and conditions permit, or move this stop to day three.

Day 2

A historic house, current art and a park

Spend the first half near National Stadium, with lunch between two complementary cultural stops. Then use rail rather than rush-hour traffic to reach Lumphini for a shorter outdoor finish.

Short walk around National Stadium, then BTS and a walk to Lumphini; approximately 2–3 km on foot
Open first stop
Morning10:00

Jim Thompson House Museum

6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama I Road, Wang Mai, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330, Thailand

Join the museum’s guided house visit for the architecture and collection, allowing extra time if the next English-language departure involves a wait. The house and nearby art center are different experiences; this stop budgets for the house only. Leave time afterward for a seated lunch before continuing on foot.

Time
1 hr 30 min
Cost
฿250 adult; reduced categories available
Hours
Daily from 10:00; main-house entry requires a guided visit. Visitor information

Worth knowing: The house contains stairs without lifts and requires shoes off. Follow current bag-storage rules; online booking is available through partners named by the museum, while walk-in tours may also be offered.

Afternoon13:00

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

939 Rama I Road, Wang Mai, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330, Thailand

Use the current exhibition list to choose one or two floors instead of assuming a permanent collection of particular artworks. The center provides a contemporary counterpoint to the historic house and a useful indoor pause. Allow yourself to spend longer with an exhibition that resonates and shorten the park stop if necessary.

Time
1 hr 30 min
Cost
General admission free; special programs may differ
Hours
Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–20:00; closed Mondays. Visitor information

From the previous stop: About 10–15 minutes walking after lunch

Worth knowing: Exhibition changeovers can leave some spaces unavailable. The current site closes at 20:00; do not rely on older listings that advertise 21:00.

Afternoon16:00

Lumphini Park

192 Wireless Road, Lumphini, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330, Thailand

Take a short lakeside loop and sit before heading back toward the Silom dinner area. The park is a place for everyday recreation, not an animal encounter; give wildlife distance and keep food to yourself. The address marks the park, while the Sala Daeng approach enters from a different side.

Time
1 hr 15 min
Cost
Free public park visit
Hours
Plan a daytime visit; check posted gate hours and weather notices. Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 30–45 minutes using BTS toward Sala Daeng and walking into the park

Worth knowing: Heat, heavy rain or poor air conditions are reasons to skip outdoor exercise. Do not add the longer walk to another park unless you actively want a more demanding day.

Day 3

Thai identity, flowers and the riverfront

Return to the old-city edge for a focused museum visit, then a working flower market. After lunch, make one transfer downriver for a flexible meal and waterfront finish.

Museum and market on foot; allow 45–70 minutes to reach ICONSIAM by operating river services or a road alternative
Open first stop
Morning10:00

Museum Siam

4 Sanam Chai Road, Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

Spend the morning exploring how the museum presents Thai identity rather than treating it as another palace interior. Follow the exhibition sequence and ask about available language support at entry. A focused visit leaves enough time for the market without turning the whole day into an indoor museum marathon.

Time
1 hr 45 min
Cost
Paid museum admission; check current visitor category
Hours
Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00; closed Mondays, with additional official notices possible. Visitor information

Worth knowing: Sanam Chai MRT is the useful station for this stop. Check the exhibition and holiday calendar, especially before using this as a rain backup for another closed museum.

Midday12:00

Pak Khlong Talat flower market

Chakkraphet Road, Wang Burapha Phirom, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok 10200, Thailand

Look at the flower preparation and bundles without obstructing deliveries or photographing people at close range without permission. The market is for working traders as well as visitors. A brief visit is enough to appreciate that difference; have a separate lunch rather than assuming every aisle contains ready-to-eat food.

Time
45 min
Cost
Free to browse; purchases extra
Hours
Working-market activity varies by stall and time; this is a short daytime visit, not a promised wholesale peak. Visitor information

From the previous stop: About 10–15 minutes on foot

Worth knowing: Wear shoes with grip and expect wet or uneven patches. Keep the visit compact if deliveries make the passages crowded, then confirm your onward pier and boat before walking there.

Afternoon15:00

ICONSIAM and SOOKSIAM

299 Charoen Nakhon Soi 5, Charoen Nakhon Road, Khlong Ton Sai, Khlong San, Bangkok 10600, Thailand

Use the food choices and riverfront to finish comfortably, especially if the earlier days were hot. SOOKSIAM is a curated indoor food-and-shopping environment, not a traditional floating market. Choose a few dishes and sit down; there is no need to cover every floor or stay for an unverified show time.

Time
2 hr including food
Cost
Free mall entry; food, shopping and special activities extra
Hours
Check current mall and restaurant hours; fountain shows and events have separate schedules. Visitor information

From the previous stop: After lunch, allow 45–70 minutes including pier access and waiting; use a taxi if the required boat route is not operating

Worth knowing: Check the return route before dinner. If you moved Wat Arun to this day, shorten the mall visit and allow the additional river transfer instead of extending the evening indefinitely.

Day 4

Old-city collections and living worship

Choose an operating museum date and reserve the exhibition circuit; lunch belongs between the first two visits.

Bangkok National Museum → Wat Suthat → Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall; allow lunch and transport buffers between visits.

Questions about this trip

Is Ayutthaya included in five days?

No. The five-day version uses the additional time in Bangkok itself, with museums and neighborhoods rather than another long journey.

Must every temple hall be open?

No. Worship and ceremonies take priority; dress appropriately and accept that some interiors may be unavailable.

Is Talat Noi a food tour booking?

This is an independent neighborhood visit. Choose lunch locally and book a guide separately if you want detailed community interpretation.
