Start with a waterfront walk and compare the food merchants before choosing breakfast or a snack. The building can be open while individual shops are closed. If a farmers market is important, check its actual day and schedule rather than expecting the full outdoor setup every morning.
Use the gate as a starting point, then explore beyond one souvenir street and choose lunch from an open restaurant. This is a living neighborhood, so keep photography considerate around shops and residents. Temple or cultural-center visits require their own opening checks and are not silently included in this walk.
Build a leisurely loop around Washington Square and the surrounding cafe and bookshop streets. Choose a proper break instead of adding a hilltop climb solely for another view. The neighborhood gives the afternoon substance through browsing and food; it does not require a reservation or a particular business to be open.
Take time for the prison interpretation and other open island exhibits rather than returning immediately after the familiar cellhouse images. The crossing and steep island paths belong in the time budget. Check accessibility arrangements and the return-boat process before booking if walking gradients or standing in queues are difficult.

Walk the landscaped overlooks and choose a place to sit after the island outing. This is a substantial park stop, not merely a transfer point to the bridge. Food availability and special programming vary, so bring a snack rather than relying on a particular truck or event to make the visit work.
Explore the south-side exhibits and viewpoints, then decide whether a short sidewalk walk is comfortable. A complete out-and-back crossing is not included. Wind and fog may favor staying near the plaza, and the experience can still be worthwhile without a clear photograph of both bridge towers.

Golden Gate Park at museum pace
A science morning, garden pause and optional focused art afternoon, all around the Music Concourse. Use Tuesday–Saturday for this order and timing.
Cross-city transit to the park, then short walks between the three entrances
Choose a few major areas rather than treating every exhibit and show as compulsory. Reserve any timed program according to the day's rules and leave room for the aquarium or natural-history displays that catch your interest. The listed visit is selective; enthusiastic science visitors should extend it and drop the afternoon art museum.

Questions about this trip
Is the Exploratorium only for children?
No. Its interactive science and perception exhibits work well for curious adults. The daytime plan does not rely on the separate 18-plus Thursday evening event.
Can I visit the closed nearby museums instead?
Not currently: the Contemporary Jewish Museum is temporarily closed and MoAD is installing exhibitions through September 29. Neither is included as an open stop.
Does the waterfront day need a second Alcatraz ticket?
No. It uses land-based science and historical amusements, followed by a meal near Ghirardelli Square.
