Two extra days give major collections more time and separate the northern waterfront from the downtown arts district. The plan does not repeat Alcatraz or the original Golden Gate Park museums.

This is a living neighborhood, so keep photography considerate around shops and residents. The neighborhood gives the afternoon substance through browsing and food; it does not require a reservation or a particular business to be open.

Day 2

The island and the Golden Gate

Make the island booking the fixed anchor and leave the afternoon flexible for weather and the return ferry.

Alcatraz Island

Take time for the prison interpretation and other open island exhibits rather than returning immediately after the familiar cellhouse images. The crossing and steep island paths belong in the time budget. Check accessibility arrangements and the return-boat process before booking if walking gradients or standing in queues are difficult.

Worth knowing: If your Alcatraz return is late, shorten this loop and skip the bridge sidewalk rather than chasing daylight.

Golden Gate Bridge south-side visitor area

Explore the south-side exhibits and viewpoints, then decide whether a short sidewalk walk is comfortable. A complete out-and-back crossing is not included. Wind and fog may favor staying near the plaza, and the experience can still be worthwhile without a clear photograph of both bridge towers.

Worth knowing: Confirm pedestrian sidewalk access and stay clear of cycle traffic. In winter, bring the viewpoint visit forward if you want daylight.

Day 3

Golden Gate Park at museum pace

A science morning, garden pause and optional focused art afternoon, all around the Music Concourse. Use Tuesday–Saturday for this order and timing.

Before you decide

Questions about this trip

Is the Exploratorium only for children?

No. Its interactive science and perception exhibits work well for curious adults. The daytime plan does not rely on the separate 18-plus Thursday evening event.

Can I visit the closed nearby museums instead?

Not currently: the Contemporary Jewish Museum is temporarily closed and MoAD is installing exhibitions through September 29. Neither is included as an open stop.

Does the waterfront day need a second Alcatraz ticket?

No. It uses land-based science and historical amusements, followed by a meal near Ghirardelli Square.
