Can we do this without hiring a car for ten days?

Yes. Keep the car-free city base and hire a car or arrange an excursion only for the outings that need it. Geelong's central route is well suited to arriving by train.

Can the Puffing Billy trip start after lunch?

Not with this complete day. The train must return early enough for Sassafras and a daylight garden visit. Book the actual morning return pair before arranging other transport.

Is NGV Australia a repeat of the earlier gallery day?

No. The original itinerary visits NGV International on St Kilda Road; the added stop is the separate Australian collection at Federation Square.
