Do I need a rental car?
Not for the downtown day. For the other two, a car or several rideshares make this particular route easier, but neither avoids traffic. Compare the total with hotel and attraction parking, and use transit where it matches your actual hotel rather than assuming every connection is convenient.
Which free attractions still need money or reservations?
The Broad and Getty offer free general admission, but advance entry arrangements and parking still matter. Griffith's general exhibits are free while planetarium shows and nearby parking can cost extra. Free admission should not be treated as a zero-cost day.
Can I add Universal Studios or Disneyland?
Replace a whole day. A theme park plus this itinerary's three existing stops is not balanced, and Disneyland adds a separate regional journey. Choose the park you want first, then rebuild the other days around the time remaining.
