3 days in Bali: Ubud and its surroundings

Three days is enough for a rewarding Ubud-based stay, not for all of Bali. This plan deliberately excludes distant beach clubs, eastern-island landmarks and boat excursions. It combines painting and performance traditions with living religious sites and a limited rice-terrace visit. The northern day is the most physically demanding because Gunung Kawi involves many steps. Choose a shorter alternative when needed, and do not treat a paid attraction's availability as a guarantee that all paths or religious areas are open.

3 daysCouples and culture travelersBalanced paceMid-range
Day 1

Art and the center of Ubud

Keep the first day walkable around Jalan Raya Ubud, with a museum morning and time for lunch. The temple-area visit and market are separate experiences, not a guarantee of an evening performance.

Museum Puri Lukisan → Ubud Water Palace → Ubud Art Market; short central walks.
Open day route
Morning9:00 AM

Museum Puri Lukisan

Jalan Raya Ubud, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Start with a selection of Balinese paintings and sculpture, using the museum to add context before visiting markets and religious sites. Give the individual works time rather than treating the gardens as the only attraction. A workshop or performance would need its own schedule; the ordinary collection visit provides a substantial morning without adding another reservation.

Time
2 hours
Cost
Paid museum admission; programmes separate
Hours
Morning visit; confirm current ticket and closing details Visitor information

Worth knowing: Use the museum's own visitor information for admission. Published sources disagree on closing time, so do not plan a last-minute evening entry.

Midday11:30 AM

Ubud Water Palace — Saraswati temple visitor area

Jalan Raya Ubud No. 14, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Explore the permitted garden and temple-view areas with time to understand the setting rather than assuming every sacred space is open. The stop includes orientation and a quiet pause, not a promised ceremony or dance show. If a performance interests you, check its actual date and treat it as a separate evening decision after dinner.

Time
1 hour 15 minutes
Cost
Check current visitor admission and included clothing requirements
Hours
Follow the current visitor programme and religious-access rules Visitor information

From the previous stop: About 5–15 minutes walking along the central street

Worth knowing: Follow the operator's dress and visitor instructions. Do not confuse this central Ubud site with Tirta Gangga in eastern Bali.

Afternoon2:30 PM

Ubud Art Market

Jalan Raya Ubud, opposite Ubud Palace, Ubud, Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Browse textiles, crafts and souvenirs at a pace that lets you compare materials and prices. Not every object sold in Ubud is necessarily handmade locally, so ask questions before purchasing. The afternoon works without buying anything: a short market circuit followed by a drink is preferable to turning the whole stay into a sequence of shopping stops.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Browsing free; purchases extra
Hours
Individual sellers have their own trading hours Visitor information

From the previous stop: About 5–15 minutes walking; lunch and a seated break before browsing

Worth knowing: Agree a price before committing and ask about materials and origin. Keep room in luggage and avoid purchases you cannot legally bring home.

Day 2

Forest visit and southern Ubud collections

Start with the managed forest visitor area, then travel south for two different collections. The final museum closes earlier than many restaurants, so protect its afternoon entry time.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary → ARMA → Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets; short walking or driver links.
Open day route
Morning9:00 AM

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

Jalan Monkey Forest, Padangtegal, Ubud, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Use the official visitor routes for the forest setting and cultural context, without seeking close contact with animals. Read the guidelines before entering and follow staff instructions throughout. This is a managed wildlife setting, not a guarantee of a harmless selfie opportunity. If anyone is uncomfortable around monkeys, replace the block with a longer museum morning.

Time
2 hours
Cost
Paid sanctuary admission
Hours
Check current opening, path access and visitor guidelines Visitor information

Worth knowing: Secure loose belongings and do not feed or provoke wildlife. Follow current staff instructions if an animal approaches or takes an item.

Midday12:00 PM

Agung Rai Museum of Art — ARMA

Jalan Raya Pengosekan Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia

Choose a few parts of the art collection and spend time in the museum setting rather than expecting every resort facility or cultural activity to be included. The experience complements Puri Lukisan without requiring you to compare every artist. Ask about any current programme that particularly interests you, but do not assume an advertised workshop runs on demand.

Time
2 hours
Cost
Museum admission; workshops and performances separate
Hours
Check the museum's current visit arrangements Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 15–30 minutes by driver or a checked walking route, with lunch beforehand

Worth knowing: Confirm the museum entrance and ticket scope. Hotel facilities, workshops and scheduled performances may have separate reservations or charges.

Afternoon3:00 PM

Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets

Tegal Bingin Street, Banjar Tengkulak Tengah, Kemenuh, Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali 80582, Indonesia

Explore a focused selection of masks and puppets, paying attention to the different places and performance traditions represented. This is a collection visit rather than a guaranteed live show. An hour provides a useful introduction if you arrive on time; if the earlier museum runs late, move this stop instead of asking staff to extend closing.

Time
1 hour
Cost
Confirm current visitor contribution or admission arrangements
Hours
Operator lists 8 AM–4 PM; arrive with time before closing Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 20–35 minutes by driver, depending on local traffic

Worth knowing: Confirm opening before the drive and avoid touching collection objects. The museum is outside the central Ubud walking cluster.

Day 3

Northern temples and a rice-terrace pause

Use a driver for this northern loop and tackle the most stair-heavy site first. Lunch and recovery time matter more than adding another swing, waterfall or distant photo attraction.

Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring → Tirta Empul → Tegallalang; driver loop north of Ubud.
Open day route
Morning9:00 AM

Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring

Gunung Kawi temple approach off Jalan Raya Tampaksiring, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia

Descend only if the substantial steps and return climb suit your group, then explore the permitted areas around the rock-cut shrines. The valley setting is part of the experience, but the route should not become an endurance test. Keep extra time for the climb back and a drink before continuing; replace the stop if the terrain is unsuitable.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Temple admission; confirm clothing arrangements
Hours
Daylight visit; check ceremonies and current access Visitor information

Worth knowing: This is Gunung Kawi Tampaksiring, not Gunung Kawi Sebatu. Wear appropriate temple clothing and allow for the return climb.

Midday11:30 AM

Tirta Empul

Jalan Tirta, Manukaya, Tampaksiring, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia

Visit the permitted temple areas respectfully without assuming you must enter the purification pools. Religious activity takes priority over a visitor timetable. If you want to participate, ask authorized staff about the proper process and current restrictions; otherwise, observing the setting and learning its significance makes a worthwhile visit before a leisurely lunch.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Temple admission; ritual-related services may be separate
Hours
Check current religious and visitor access arrangements Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 15–30 minutes by driver, plus recovery time after the stairs

Worth knowing: Follow local dress and ritual instructions. Do not enter a pool or restricted sacred area simply because other visitors appear to be doing so.

Afternoon3:00 PM

Tegallalang rice-terrace area

Jalan Raya Tegallalang, Tegallalang, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia

Choose a clearly permitted viewpoint or a short path that suits the conditions, then sit for a drink overlooking the landscape. Rice growth and harvesting change the appearance, so a uniformly green scene is not guaranteed. The plan does not include swings, plantation shopping or entering working fields without permission; those are separate decisions, not required parts of the terrace experience.

Time
1 hour 30 minutes
Cost
Entrance, viewpoint and café charges vary by property
Hours
Daylight visit; paths and individual businesses vary Visitor information

From the previous stop: Allow 30–50 minutes by driver, with lunch before arrival

Worth knowing: Ask which paths your admission covers and respect working farmland. A seated view is a valid alternative when steps, mud or heat make walking unsuitable.

Before you decide

Questions about this trip

Does this cover the best of the whole island in three days?

No. It is deliberately limited to Ubud and nearby Gianyar. Staying at a southern beach resort would add significant road time to these days. If beaches or another region matter more, replace a day or split a longer trip rather than trying to fit every Bali landmark into this route.

Do I need to join a purification ritual at Tirta Empul?

No. A respectful visit to permitted areas is worthwhile without participating. If you choose a ritual, ask authorized staff about current dress, access and procedure rather than following other tourists. Participation, equipment and guiding arrangements are separate from simply viewing the temple.

What if I cannot manage many stairs?

Replace Gunung Kawi with a longer central museum or another venue whose current accessibility you have confirmed. The rice terraces also have uneven paths and changes in level, so a seated viewpoint may suit better than a valley walk. Do not assume a driver booking removes the walking requirements at each stop.
