Flight time and arrival calculator

Use the local schedule times and named time zones to calculate scheduled elapsed flight time or destination-local arrival. The calculator applies date-specific daylight-saving offsets automatically. Your entries stay in this page and are not uploaded or saved.

What this calculator does not know

Airport lookup fills a named time zone from a local directory. This calculator does not estimate route distance or flight duration, read airline schedules, predict delays, include taxi time or decide whether a connection is workable.

Confirm the schedule with the airline or booking provider. Named-zone rules come from the browser runtime and can change when governments revise future clock rules.

Quick answer

How to calculate flight time across time zones

Convert the local departure and arrival date-times to UTC using each place's named time zone for those dates. Then subtract departure UTC from arrival UTC. Keep the published calendar dates, including an overnight arrival, and do not subtract the displayed local clock times directly.

Check the inputs

Keep schedule math separate from a flight prediction.

This calculator does not invent a city-to-city flight estimate. It converts the schedule and named time zones you provide, so every assumption remains visible and replaceable.

Worked example: New York to London

Suppose a flight leaves New York at 6:00 p.m. on September 20, 2026 and arrives in London at 7:00 a.m. on September 21. New York is UTC−4 and London is UTC+1 on those dates. That makes the elapsed time from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. UTC eight hours.

If you know the eight-hour duration instead, choose “Departure and flight duration” to calculate the same 7:00 a.m. London arrival. These are illustrative times, not a real flight schedule.

Westbound example: New York to Los Angeles

For an illustrative schedule on September 20, 2026, depart New York at 11:30 a.m. and arrive in Los Angeles at 2:15 p.m. that same local calendar day. Choose America/New_York and America/Los_Angeles in the calculator. On that date, New York is UTC−4 and Los Angeles is UTC−7: departure is 3:30 p.m. UTC and arrival is 9:15 p.m. UTC, giving five hours and 45 minutes.

Subtracting the displayed local times gives only two hours and 45 minutes. It misses the three-hour westbound clock change. Use the actual schedule dates and named zones, not a fixed offset assumed for every trip. These are example times, not a published flight or a prediction of its duration.

Half-hour example: Darwin to Brisbane

Suppose you leave Darwin at 10:42 a.m. on October 15, 2026 and have a supplied duration of four hours and 10 minutes. Choose Australia/Darwin and Australia/Brisbane. Darwin is UTC+09:30 and Brisbane is UTC+10:00, so Brisbane's clock is 30 minutes ahead. Your example arrival is 3:22 p.m. (15:22) that same day.

To cross-check, departure is 01:12 UTC and arrival is 05:22 UTC: four hours and 10 minutes apart. Subtracting the local clock times instead gives four hours and 40 minutes, which includes the half-hour clock change. These are supplied example inputs, not a published flight or a prediction of its duration.

The NSW Government's time-zone guide lists these offsets and confirms that neither the Northern Territory nor Queensland observes daylight saving.

An overnight flight can change your arrival date, but it does not determine your hotel booking. Use the number of hotel nights calculator with the accommodation's actual check-in and check-out dates. Confirm early-arrival room access directly with the accommodation.

Comparing routes or sellers after that? Use the flight booking decision checker to compare backtracking, known fees and traveler time.

Only need to translate a local time between cities? The time zone converter applies the named zones' date-specific daylight-saving offsets automatically.

Coordinating travelers on different flights or trains? Carry each destination-local arrival into the group arrival planner to include terminal buffers, transfers and hotel check-in before setting a meetup time.

Start with the published schedule

Use the local departure and arrival dates and times from the same current itinerary, including an overnight arrival date when shown.

Choose the named time zones

The calculator applies each location's date-specific clock rules automatically. Confirm that the selected city or IANA zone matches each airport.

Keep airport time separate

Scheduled flight time is not the full journey. Add check-in, security, transfers, immigration and baggage time to the day plan separately.
