Myrtle Beach without a car: where to stay and what to leave out

Choose a base by three routine journeys, not a resort label

Before booking, map the walks from the property’s entrance to a beach access, breakfast and a place to buy basic supplies. A central oceanfront stay can suit a boardwalk-focused trip: the promenade is a specific coastal attraction, not a walking connection to every place marketed as Myrtle Beach. Check road crossings, distance and the route back after dinner at the address level.

The Market Common area is another planning candidate if shops and local outings matter more than being directly on the ocean; count beach transport separately. A farther-north or south resort may work well for staying mostly on site, but inspect each advertised shuttle service with the property. These are accommodation tradeoffs, not endorsements of particular hotels. A cheaper room stops being a saving if it requires paid rides for every meal.

Plan the airport arrival with luggage and a late-flight fallback

Myrtle Beach International Airport lists taxis, rideshares, shuttles and public transport among its ground options. Its public-bus information identifies Coast RTA Route 15S and a stop on Jetport Road. Check the current operator schedule for your actual arrival time, including the walk to the stop and any connection needed for your accommodation. A bus appearing on an airport website does not guarantee a useful connection after your flight.

Compare the total effort as well as the fare. With several bags, a tired family or an evening arrival, a direct ride may be the practical part of an otherwise car-free stay. Ask the property whether its shuttle requires advance booking and whether it really covers your flight time. Keep a separate budget for the journey back to the airport, with a buffer rather than the last possible bus connection.

Do not plan around the former free Entertainment Shuttle

Coast RTA’s Entertainment Shuttle page now says the service stopped in June 2026, with many locations added to year-round fixed routes. Older tourism advice—and even some older operator pages—still mentions the seasonal free shuttle. The dated change is the relevant starting point for this guide; do not book a stay on the assumption that an old shuttle map still describes the service.

Use the operator’s current route information and live tracker to check each outing. Record the outward stop, the correct return stop, any transfer and the final usable departure. Opposite-direction stops may not sit directly across the street. If a journey requires an awkward wait or crossing, choose a different outing or budget a direct ride; there is no prize for making every part of the holiday fit one bus route.

Understand the fare, but budget for the trip a bus cannot cover

The operator’s contactless-payment page lists $1 per boarding and a $3.50 daily cap for eligible contactless payment. Cash is accepted under the published arrangement but does not receive that cap. A change of buses therefore matters: compare boardings, not just how many attractions you visit, and use the payment method consistently if relying on a cap.

Different operator pages publish conflicting off-peak discount windows, so this guide does not promise a free senior or other concession journey. Ask Coast RTA to confirm any discount you expect to use. Keep an independent ride allowance for a missed connection, an earlier-than-planned return or a late meal. An inexpensive bus fare is useful, but it is not evidence of frequent service or a guarantee that a rideshare will be immediately available.

Try a compact two-day outline before adding distant attractions

For a central oceanfront base, make the first day a beach-access and boardwalk day with food near the accommodation. Keep the afternoon flexible and test the walk back before planning evening activities farther away. For day two, choose one reachable cluster—such as The Market Common—only after checking the operator’s current journey options. Use a return ride if that gives the group a more comfortable day.

Do not add Brookgreen, Conway and Little River simply because they appear in the same regional guide. Look at each complete round trip and choose the one you most want, if any. A car-free holiday can deliberately have fewer geographical targets while still offering a full day of activities. Save the rest for another visit, or compare the cost and effort of a separately arranged day excursion before committing.
